When it comes to vehicles, safety is paramount. This is why it is one of the determining factors for customers while choosing vehicles.
The list of safest vehicles for 2022 has been recently announced by IIHS. IIHS is the acronym for Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
This year’s safety picks were different from the past. But why? Well, mainly because among the 65 vehicles that won the Top Safety Pick+ award, 7 of them were electric.
Which Were The Safest EV Picks For 2022?
These 7 safest EVs were:
- Tesla Model 3;
- Tesla Model Y;
- Volvo XC40 Recharge;
- Volvo C40 Recharge;
- Volkswagen ID.4;
- Audi E-Tron;
- Audi E-Tron Sportback.
Mandatory For Winning This Award?
This brings us to the next question that for being selected as the safest vehicle, which tests have to be carried out on a vehicle.
The vehicles that get the Top Safety Pick+ award must get a “Good” rating in the following tests:
– Driver-side small overlap front;
– Passenger-side small overlap front;
– Moderate overlap front;
– Original side;
– Roof strength test;
– Head restraint tests.
Besides this, these vehicles need to score either “Advanced” or “Superior” rating in the following tests:
– Front Crash Prevention;
– Vehicle to Vehicle Evaluation;
– Vehicle to Passenger Evaluation.
Other than these 7 EVs, the Hyundai Nexo which is a Hydrogen-powered car also got the Top Safety Pick + award.
This is worth mentioning because Hydrogen is an alternate technology to electric cars.
How Did The Ford Mustang-E Perform?
The Ford Mustang-E is a famous electric vehicle from the US automaker. This vehicle could not make it to the top safest EV picks for 2022 because of its headlights.
The front lights on the Select & California 1 Trim levels got a relatively lower rating.
This pushed the vehicle to a fairly lower place. However, it still got the second-tier safety award from IIHS.
When Will Safety Rating For EV Pickups Be Launched?
2023 is a momentous year in the history of electric vehicles. This is mainly because from next year onwards, the electric trucks including GMC Hummer EV and Rivian R1T will be included in the tests.
This will show us how well these electric vehicles compete with conventional trucks.
While the GMC Hummer EV looks promising, thanks to its brawny look and feel, only tests will tell how well it performs.
Will The Ford 150 Lighting Be Included?
Whether or not the Ford 150 Lighting will also be made a part of the tests next year remains to be seen.
According to reports, IIHS is working on a tougher side impact test for these electric trucks.
The safety of electric vehicles is even more important than ICE vehicles. This is because the Li-ion batteries on such vehicles make them highly susceptible to fire.
This is why the tougher side impact test has been included in the list for such trucks.
The IIHS tests show which vehicles are the best in the market when it comes to safety.
These tests allow buyers to make informed decisions during their purchases. This is why these tests are deemed highly important throughout the world.
